Is your child in primary school: frequently asked questions

How do I work well with school?

As a parent, it is important that you work well with the school. You know your child well and see how your child is doing at home. And you know what your child needs. The school sees how your child is doing at school. Discuss with the school what the school can do and what you can do. See what the school guide and school support profile say and what help the school can give. And what you might be able to do to help the school. Make sure agreements are on paper. And agree when you will have your next meeting to see how things are going.

If you are concerned and think your child needs extra help, discuss this with your child's teacher. You can make an appointment for this. When making an appointment, briefly explain what you want to talk about. During the meeting, you can discuss your concerns. You will also get information on how the teacher sees your child doing. You can also contact the internal supervisor (IB'er). This person ensures that children receive extra help at school.

Is the school inviting you for an interview? Ask the school what exactly is the purpose of the interview. What points they want to discuss. And who else will be at the meeting. Before the meeting, think carefully about what you want to discuss. What are your concerns (with examples) and what is going well. It is useful to write this down for yourself. You can use the notes during the meeting.

You may always bring someone you trust to a meeting. This can be the other parent, but also someone else who knows your child well. Or your child's social worker. During the meeting, always agree on what happens after the meeting. Who will do what? When will there be another meeting? And how will you work well together as a parent and school? Ask the school to e-mail or send a report of the meeting. This should also include the agreements you made with school. You can also always take notes yourself and make a report containing the agreements made. Then share this report with school as well.

An interview with the Fritz Redlschool and the UMCU

Located next to the Utrecht University Medical Centre (UMCU), the Fritz Redlschool is a school for children treated at the Development Perspective department of this hospital or other mental health organisations.
